An onion address is not a name that points at a machine. It is the machine's public key written in a readable alphabet, which is why they are long, ugly and impossible to guess. Reaching one means you reached something holding the matching private key. It does not mean you reached the people you meant to reach, because a key can be held by anyone who has a copy of it.
That distinction is the whole reason this site exists in the shape it does. An awazon market url that loads has told you one narrow technical fact. Everything else you might want to believe about it has to come from material you were already holding.
Why there is no status here
Plenty of pages will tell you an awazon working link is up. To make that claim honestly you would have to have connected to it moments before you served the page, and you would have to serve a fresh answer to every visitor. Almost nobody does this, and the ones who do are describing a second that has already passed.
This site takes the other route and simply does not know. No checking runs here, no availability number is calculated, and no page is stamped with a date it was tested. If an address does not answer for you, this site has nothing to add about why. What it can offer is the entry on keeping a second address written down beforehand, which is the part you control.
Copying one without wrecking it
Use the copy button rather than your eyes. Fifty six characters of base32 look like noise, and a person proofreading noise will confirm any string you show them. If you must move an address by hand, write it in blocks and compare from both ends towards the middle rather than reading left to right.
The far more useful habit is keeping your own copy somewhere, which is what the address file entry covers, and keeping a separate note of the one that actually worked for you last time, which is a different thing entirely. Published and worked-for-me are two categories, and the confusion between them is a small industry.
What would actually confirm an address
A signature would. If the market signs a statement listing its addresses, and you hold a fingerprint of its key that you collected yourself from places that do not copy each other, then checking that signature tells you something real. Without your own copy of the fingerprint the check is theatre, because the page showing you the key and the page showing you the addresses are the same page.
That is why a fingerprint you collected yourself sits in the account list rather than in a technical appendix. It is a possession. You either wrote it down before you needed it or you are relying on whatever is in front of you now.
- An address that loads proves the far end holds the matching key, and nothing beyond that.
- A familiar looking prefix proves nothing at all, since the readable part of any of these can be ground out by anyone patient.
- A signature checked against a fingerprint you already held is worth more than every other signal combined.
- A page that says an address is verified, including this one, is a page making a claim you cannot inspect.
If none of them answer
Sometimes nothing loads and there is no way to tell from outside whether the fault is the network, your own client, or the far end. This site will not guess for you. What it will say is that the moment you have lost your only route is the worst possible moment to go looking for a new one, because that is exactly when a person will accept an address from wherever it is offered.
The material that helps here was collected earlier: a dated file, a spare address written down, a fingerprint to check a signed notice against, and an account somewhere else that already exists. None of it can be assembled in the ten minutes after you find yourself locked out.
